New MSCP’s given green light

Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council and Birmingham City Council Grants Planning Permission for new Multi-Storey Car Parks on two Hospitals

Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council and Birmingham City Council Grants Planning Permission for new Hospital Multi-Storey Car Parks

Thursday, 16 April 2020 – Birmingham, UK

An NHS Trust has been given the green light to build multi-storey car parks at two hospital sites which will improve access for staff, patients and visitors.

Permission has been granted by Sandwell Council for a 400-space facility which will be erected at Sandwell Hospital in West Bromwich, whilst Birmingham City Council gave the go ahead for a 550-space car park at City Hospital.

Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, which runs the two sites, will improve parking by creating the new facilities which will be used by staff, patients and visitors.

Sandwell Hospital is undergoing some significant changes over the coming years with work underway for a £6 million health centre which will house Carters Green Medical Centre and Lyndon Health Centre. The existing provision of car parking space will be constructed to meet the parking demands of the site.

City Hospital is due to be redeveloped over the coming years to incorporate new housing and commercial space and will continue to provide health services at the Birmingham Treatment Centre, the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre and the Sheldon Block.

The Trust is working with leading car park operator, Q-Park and it’s development partner Prime, to progress the plans for the new car parks.

Residents, councillors and hospital staff were invited to hear about the proposals during engagement events held in October 2019. The views, ideas and concerns gathered fed into the planning application which was submitted to the two local authorities by specialist health and care developer Prime.

James Pollitt, Associate Director of Strategic Development, from the Trust, said: “We’re delighted to have received planning permission, which will address a longstanding concern for our dedicated workforce.  Our schemes will include Electric Charge vehicle provision and will help us to tackle parking on neighbouring streets.  The Trust continues to invest in supporting other modes of travel as part of our Net Zero commitment.”

Ewan Forsyth, Prime’s Development Director, said: “These consents allow us to take the first steps towards delivering much-needed infrastructure for the Trust to help achieve its strategic vision and deliver affordable, high-quality facilities that improve the patient, visitor and staff experience.”

Adam Bidder, Managing Director of Q-Park UK, added: “We’re delighted to have received planning permission, especially in these uncertain times when high-quality facilities on hospital sites are so important.

“Building the multi-storey car parks has the potential to improve the quality of access and parking at both Sandwell General Hospital and City Hospital to enhance the patient, visitor and staff experience.”
