Smart new car park for Sale town centre

November 2004

A new mixed-use development at Waterside in Sale has been announced, comprising a smart car park and affordable housing. The development will include a top quality, stylish new 440-space multi-storey car park being built by specialist car park operators Q-Park, and 41 attractive apartments being built by Manchester Methodist Housing Group. Together they meet the need for both new housing and new parking facilities in the area.

Parking facilities

The £4.9 million car park will have an eye-catching façade to complement the new Waterside development. High quality materials will be used inside and out, and the car park will reflect Q-Park’s innovative house style and special brand of car park hospitality including: outstanding levels of customer service, superb quality interior car park design and finish, a high level of security and use of high-tech equipment throughout.

The car park and apartments will complement the canal side development, which includes the Town Hall and Sale Civic Theatre refurbishments, and the new arts, leisure and festival area extending down to the canal side.

Q-Park’s Chief Executive Officer Alan Ashbee said: "We are delighted to have the opportunity to link Q-Park’s high quality car parking services with an important housing development and to be part of the exciting Waterside area in Sale".

The car park will serve shopper, leisure users, office workers and users of Council services during the day and will support the local theatre, bars, restaurants and the redeveloped canal side in the evenings. In addition, as it will be situated less than 100 metres from Sale Metrolink station, it will provide parking facilities for commuters and other users of the Metrolink travelling into central Manchester.

Chairman of Sale Area Board Councillor David Higgins said that the car park should bring an end to the serious lack of parking spaces needed for shoppers and visitors to the area. He added: "Q-Park’s proposals to create an impressive, top quality multi-storey car park is an important part of the continued regeneration of the area".

The new car park is due for completion in spring 2006, with a second phase planned to extend the number of spaces to 600.

Affordable housing

The 41 stylish new apartments will be sold in the main on a shared ownership basis under the Homebuy scheme with 75% of the apartment acquired by the buyer and the remaining 25% funded through grants obtained from Trafford Borough Council. The rest will be sold outright.

It is expected that work will start on the site at Broad Road in the spring of 2005. The apartments will be on sale soon after.
