Talk of the town
The distinctive £16 million car park was designed by London-based architects Allies and Morrison, who are steering the St Paul's masterplan. Its most striking feature is a bold, eye-catching façade that has generated passionate debate amongst the residents of Sheffield as well as considerable column inches in the local press.
The facade is made up of reflective aluminium plates in four configurations creating varying textures of shadow and light and giving a shimmering effect. The inside of the panels is in green to reflect the trees at St Paul's, with the colour subtly revealed in daylight and more apparent at night when it gives an impression of sunlight filtering through leaves. The car park’s imaginative design has already earned it a host of nicknames - the Sugar Cube, the Cheese Grater, the Rubik’s Cube and the Roost - and it set to take its place as a key landmark for the city.
Q-Park Charles Street will be the company’s fourth car park for Sheffield, adding to its Riverside, Castlegate and railway station sites.
